NHS spring COVID-19 vaccinations begin in Hampshire and Isle of Wight
Campaign targets those most at risk from COVID-19
The NHS in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight has launched its spring COVID-19 vaccination campaign today, offering crucial protection to those most vulnerable to the virus.
Running from 13th April to 30th June, the campaign focuses on vaccinating specific groups, including individuals aged 75 years and over, care home residents, and adults and children aged six months and over with weakened immune systems.
Eligible individuals with compromised immune systems may include those living with HIV, recipients of organ, bone marrow, or stem cell transplants, as well as people undergoing radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Genetic conditions affecting the immune system and medications that suppress immune response are also factors considered.
Importance of Continued Vaccination
Dr Zaid Hirmiz, GP and Deputy Chief Medical Officer for NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight, highlighted the ongoing need for vigilance: "Although life has largely returned to normal for many of us, COVID-19 has not gone away and continues to circulate within our communities."
"For those who are more vulnerable, whether due to age or underlying health conditions, the spring vaccination offers important additional protection and helps lower the chances of becoming seriously unwell or needing hospital care."
Dr Hirmiz explained that continued vaccination efforts are necessary due to the evolving nature of viruses: "People may question why further doses are needed, but this is because viruses naturally evolve over time. Vaccines are updated accordingly to ensure they continue to provide the strongest possible defence."
Ways to Access Vaccination
Eligible individuals can access vaccinations conveniently through several methods. Many will be directly contacted by their GP practice, but appointments can also be booked via the National Booking System, the NHS App, or by calling 119 without waiting for an invitation.
The NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight website will provide updates on any roving clinics available for vaccinations. This year’s spring campaign aims to reach the 296,180 eligible people within the region, aiming to diminish serious illness and safeguard those most at risk.
