Mobile phone charging on bed causes house fire in Southampton

A mobile phone left charging on a bed is being given as the cause of a house fire in Southampton.

Crews from St Mary's and Redbridge were called to Denzil Avenue just before 8:45am this morning.

The fire was located in a first floor bedroom and involved mobile phone that was charging on a bed.

Firefighters used jets to extinguish the fire and then ventilated the property.

There were no casualties.

The fire service are now urging everyone to follow their advice:

• Only use the charger that the item came with. If the original charger is not available, obtain a replacement from the manufacturer.
• Don’t leave items on charge continuously – disconnect when the item is fully charged.
• Charge your batteries in a safe place; away from combustible materials and in an area which would not block your exit if there was a fire.
• Do not cover lithium batteries when charging.
• Regularly check the condition of the battery, Look for dents, deformation or signs of overheating. Stop using/charging the battery if you notice any damage.
• Ensure you have working smoke alarms
