Universities across Hampshire are seeing an increase in the number of students attending their local institute as opposed to travelling away.

It comes as thousands of students across the UK receive their A Level results.

The University of Portsmouth say they're seeing a rise in the numbers of local students with the cost of living crisis.

Claudia Bradshaw, Student Finance Information Officer for the University of Portsmouth, said: "Nationally, there has been an increase in the number of students who are choosing to live at home and go to a local university, and that's certainly true for us and our region as well.

"It is to do with the cost of living.

"If a student lives away from home, their most significant cost is likely to be their accommodation.

"One way that students can save a lot is by staying at home and staying local.

"One great thing about students from our region is that they've got lots of universities to choose from and we're also very good at looking after the students that are from our area and coming to Portsmouth."

A record number of students will be celebrating being accepted into college or university after receiving their results yesterday.

Ms Bradshaw gave her advice to those who may be worried about finances.

She said: "If anyone is getting their results and they have any concerns about money, don't let it put you off going to university.

"There are lots of options and money shouldn't be a barrier.

"If you do need to talk that through with someone, you can contact one of the universities you're interested in."

Clearing lines have also opened up and will be open until 20th October 2025.

People who can access Clearing are those who:

  • Are applying to university after 30th June
  • Didn't receive any offers or any offers they wanted to accept
  • Didn't meet the conditions of the offers
  • Declined firm place using the 'decline my place' button in your application
