Guildhall square ice rink could stay for another eight years if plans approve
The future of the Guildhall Square ice rink could be secured for another eight years if councillors approve plans next week.
Members of Portsmouth City Council’s planning committee will be asked to give permission for the Christmas ice rink to return each winter from the 2026/27 festive season until 2033/34. Previously it has had to seek permission each year.
The application, submitted by S3K Group, asks for permission to install the temporary ice rink from the day after Remembrance Day until all structures are removed by the second week of January each year.
Planning officers have recommended the plans for approval, saying the rink brings economic, social and cultural benefits that outweigh its temporary impact on the city centre conservation area.
The proposal includes a marquee covering about 1,100 square metres, taking up most of Guildhall Square. It would house the ice rink, entrances, plant equipment and maintenance facilities while the attraction is open.
A report to the committee says the attraction helps support the city centre during the festive period and notes there is no similar ice skating facility anywhere else in Portsmouth.
It also says the rink has become a well-established seasonal attraction. It previously had planning permission between 2017 and 2024 and has operated without any significant problems.
The report concludes the attraction is unlikely to have an unacceptable impact on nearby residents or businesses. It adds that neighbouring shops and businesses could benefit from increased footfall.
If approved, planning conditions would allow the rink to operate only between 1 November and 31 January each year. All structures would then have to be removed so Guildhall Square can continue to host civic events for the rest of the year.
