Eastleigh MP demands urgent action on football brain injuries
Liz Jarvis MP welcomes research call but seeks immediate measures
Liz Jarvis, the Liberal Democrat MP for Eastleigh, has commended the Football Association's call for independent research into the long-term effects of heading injuries in football, but she insists that more immediate measures are necessary.
Ms Jarvis, who serves on the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, is advocating for accelerated action following the death of her constituent's husband, Chris Nicholl, in February 2024.
Chris Nicholl, a former footballer for Southampton and Aston Villa, suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and did not receive support from the Professional Footballers' Association Brain Health Fund before his passing.
Jane Nicholl, his widow, has expressed feeling let down by the lack of support and attention her husband received.
In response to this, Liz Jarvis has brought the issue to Parliament by co-sponsoring an amendment to the Football Governance Bill.
The amendment suggests that support for footballers with neurodegenerative conditions should be part of any strategy published by the Independent Football Regulator.
Moreover, it calls for the Independent Football Regulator to manage a fair financial scheme within the industry to provide care for affected individuals.
Liz Jarvis is set to further discuss brain injuries in football with Stephanie Peacock MP, the Minister for Sport, Tourism, Civil Society and Youth.
Commenting on the situation, Liz Jarvis said: “There is a terrifying link between heading a football and brain injuries. This is football’s open secret, and both Ministers and football governing bodies have a duty to support footballers with brain injuries and their families.
“Jane Nicholl’s story is sadly one that many families have faced. It is a tragedy that so many footballers have been affected by neurological conditions.
"Whilst I welcome that the FA has called for independent research into the impact of heading, the scale of this problem means that action has to be taken urgently.”
