Beavers have been recorded for the first time at Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve near Ringwood, Hampshire.

The landmark footage, showing two beavers, was captured on 1st May 2026 by a regular visitor and shared with the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust.

Martin de Retuerto, Director of Nature Recovery at Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, expressed excitement about the footage.

“Blashford Lakes is a remarkable place for nature, with a rich mix of lakes, wetlands, reedbeds and woodland, so it’s no great surprise that beavers, which depend on healthy freshwater habitats, may be exploring the area,” de Retuerto said.

The footage was captured by Tony Thompson, a neighbouring resident, who said it was an incredible sight.

“I walk through the nature reserve regularly and am used to seeing wildlife, so I initially assumed it was an otter. But when I saw it splashing its tail, I realised it was behaving differently. A few minutes later I was amazed to see two of them interacting in the water. They seemed completely unaware of me nearby, and it was an incredible thing to witness,” Thompson said.

The Trust advises visitors to appreciate the wildlife responsibly by maintaining a safe distance and avoiding disturbance. Dogs are not permitted in the reserve.

Beavers, known as a keystone species, can transform landscapes by creating wetlands that improve water quality and enhance biodiversity. Their presence also aids in water management, reducing pollution, storing water during droughts, and mitigating flood risks.

Despite some concerns about beavers' return to landscapes, the Trust believes that their ecological and societal benefits far outweigh potential impacts, with examples from other UK regions like Devon and Kent demonstrating successful coexistence.

The Trust’s licensed staff are equipped to manage beaver activity and continue monitoring the situation alongside partners and the local community.
