Stricter parking penalties trial returns to Bournemouth seafront in August
BCP Council ramps up fines to curb illegal parking
Parking fines will once again be heightened in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) as part of a trial aimed at reducing illegal parking near the seafront this August.
The initiative, running from 4th August to 31st August 2026, will target roads from Sandbanks to Southbourne, continuing last year's successful measures that improved safety and accessibility.
Department for Transport Approval
Earlier this month, the Department for Transport (DfT) approved BCP Council's request for a second trial. This move aims to bolster evidence from the last year’s pilot that demonstrated the effectiveness of tougher penalties in altering driver behaviour.
In 2025, contrary to expectations of a nearly 9% rise, total Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) fell by almost 7%, marking a 16% improvement. The most noticeable behavioural changes included fewer vehicles parked on double-yellow lines, less obstruction at junctions, and improved access for buses and emergency services.
Community Backing
Cllr Richard Herrett, Portfolio Holder for Destination, Leisure, and Commercial Operations, highlighted the importance of enforcing stricter penalties to address illegal and dangerous parking at the seafront. Speaking on the trial's effectiveness, Herrett said:
“The inconsiderate, illegal, and dangerous parking we see on our seafront every single summer continues to put people at risk.
“For too long, residents and businesses have had to deal with blocked driveways, obstructed access points and emergency vehicles struggling to get through some of our busiest routes. That is completely unacceptable.
“The evidence is clear: tougher fines work. They cut illegal parking, improve safety and have strong backing from the people most affected - including 59% of residents and 76% of local businesses who gave their feedback to last year’s trial.”
He further emphasised that the area remained popular despite increased fines, with visitor numbers doubling year-on-year and millions of trips made monthly.
New Penalty Rates
During the trial period, fines will align with the higher rates seen in London:
£160 for higher tariff offences, reduced to £80 if paid within 14 days
£110 for lower tariff offences, reduced to £55 if paid within 14 days
Towaway fines will also reflect London rates:
£280 for release from the Car Pound
£55 for the Storage Fee per day
£100 for the Disposal Fee
These elevated penalties will apply to on-street and off-street locations, covering 543 coastal roads from Sandbanks to Southbourne.
