Wolverhampton police have introduced Business Crime Officers to address retail crime, enhancing security for shops and traders.

The initiative involves four Business Crime Officers supported by two Police Community Support Officers, targeting repeat offenders and collaborating with retailers and partners.

A Retail Crime Operational Group has been established, meeting monthly to tackle the root causes of retail crime and share problem-solving strategies.

Partnerships with probation services, the Local Authority, the anti-social behaviour team, and housing providers focus on long-term measures, enhancing security and improving crime reporting.

The effectiveness of these strategies is evident, with positive outcomes for shop thefts rising to 53 percent, a significant increase from 29 percent the previous year.

Community Behaviour Orders, imposing strict conditions on known offenders, have increased, granting officers additional powers of arrest for breaches, often leading to further court sentences.

Several repeat offenders have been swiftly prosecuted, including Martin Johnson, convicted of 18 thefts and jailed for 52 weeks. Two more individuals await hearings while on remand.

Inspector Martin Danher, leading retail crime efforts in Wolverhampton, emphasized the commitment to reducing shop thefts, highlighting collaboration with local retailers and Business Improvement District representatives.

"Our Retail Crime Operational Group kicks off next month and we're looking forward to working even more closely with our partners," Danher said, reflecting on the dedication to combat shop theft.

Councillor Obaida Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing, and Community, highlighted the city's ongoing developments, contributing to a safer and welcoming environment for residents and visitors.

"Ambitious and exciting developments are unfolding in the heart of Wolverhampton," Ahmed said. "We are pleased to be working closely with partners to address retail crime and other initiatives to ensure Wolverhampton remains a safe city."
