A Wolverhampton Nutritionist has supported the voluntary ban on junk food adverts before the Watershed.

On the 1st of October The UK introduced the restrictions on advertising less healthy food and drink products before 9pm - with a permanent ban coming in January.

The ban targets products high in fat, sugar, or salt, including items like soft drinks, chocolates, sweets, pizzas, and some breakfast cereals.

The regulations are designed to combat childhood obesity.

Wolverhampton Nutritionist Samuel James Thomas said:

"1 in 10 UK children is now considered obese and it normal effects those from low income families. I do see more and more clients who over decades have learnt habits that need to be undone."

Research shows that exposure to adverts for less healthy food can affect what and when children eat, shaping their food preferences from a young age - This increases their risk of becoming overweight or obese.

Samuel added:

"Children will often connect junk foods and sugary foods to achievements. You see it a lot that if a child does well they get a bag of sweets so later in life this continues."

The changes are estimated to help prevent around 20,000 cases of childhood obesity. Ensuring children get the best and healthiest start in life.
