West Mercia Police say it'll be working in a number of town centres and high streets across the region this summer focusing on reducing criminality.

The force is taking part in the safer streets summer initiative which involves over 500 town centres and high streets across England and Wales.

Its focus is on reducing town centre criminality, shop theft, street crime and anti-social behaviour across the UK.

16 places in total will be looked at by West Mercia Police, 11 being in the Herefordshire and Worcestershire area including the likes of Ross-on-Wye and Redditch, with five in other areas such as Shrewsbury in Shropshire.

Brian Gibbs from the force says it will highlight the work already being done in these places but focus on it more during higher footfall.

He said: "Doing this work just further empowers what we normally do 24/7 and that we're focusing on those areas which really affect public perception and the safety within our communities.

"It's a clear strategic focus on retail crime, shoplifting, antisocial behaviour but also our night time economy with a real focus on serious violence and violence against women.

"We know the national sporting events that are going on with the European Championships and this does increase our footfall and our demand within our town and city centres, so it's absolutely right that we focus our attention to maintain the safety of these."

The initiative runs until 30 September.
