Walsall plans to enter a period of significant change this year, with major investments driving new housing, job creation and opportunities for residents. The borough is attracting funding to revitalise local areas, restore historic buildings, and convert disused sites into hubs for business, leisure, and community use.

Councillor Adrian Andrew, Deputy Leader of Walsall Council, said:

“We’re starting 2026 in a really strong position with lots to look forward to across the borough. We’re moving forward with transformative schemes that are already underway, and we’re implementing new frameworks and strategies to build on the incredible progress we’ve already made.

“2026 will bring new housing, new railway stations, more jobs and opportunities, and the start of the major transformation of Walsall town centre, and much more."

Plans for 2026:

The borough will see a range of projects aimed at boosting employment and improving infrastructure:

Walsall Town Centre’s ‘Connected Gateway’ programme will continue, starting with demolition in Park Street to create a clear sightline between the rail and bus stations. Plans also include upgrades to Gallery Square, the canal basin, and ongoing renovations at the Saddlers Centre to expand retail, dining, and leisure options.

The Adult Learning Centre, located in the former Marks & Spencer building, is set to open in September 2027, offering new educational opportunities for residents.

The Guildhall, a Grade II* listed building, is scheduled to reopen in summer 2026 after extensive restoration. The venue will serve as a hub for artists and makers, providing space and equipment to support creative businesses.

In Willenhall, Keepmoat Homes Ltd will begin construction of new homes following the demolition of derelict buildings on over 2 hectares of land acquired by Walsall Council. The work will replace neglected structures and antisocial spaces with high-quality housing.

Connectivity is also set to improve, with new railway stations in Willenhall and Darlaston reopening in 2026. These stations will restore rail links to local communities for the first time in 60 years.

Planning for the future:

Walsall Council is preparing its Borough Local plan, following consultation with residents, while advancing its Town Centre Framework and Housing Strategies. These plans aim to guide sustainable development across the borough, ensuring that future projects meet the needs of local communities.

With major projects underway and a bold vision for the future, Walsall is set to enter a new chapter of growth, opportunity, and transformation.
