Train services between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury are back on track following extensive repairs due to a freight train derailment in Oxley, Wolverhampton.

The low-speed derailment occurred on Tuesday evening, 5th May, causing substantial damage to railway infrastructure, including tracks and overhead power lines.

In response, teams worked tirelessly to recover the freight wagon and perform necessary repairs.

Significant repair efforts included fixing overhead power lines, installing a new signal and supporting structure, and ensuring the area is safe for train operations.

While passenger services have now resumed, follow‑up recovery and repair work will continue alongside the operational railway.

This additional work will involve replacing approximately 100 sleepers and 60 metres of rail on an adjacent freight line.

Martin Colmey, operations director for Network Rail’s Central route, commented on the challenging situation, acknowledging the complexity of the recovery due to significant damage caused by the derailment.

The wagon remained upright, and no injuries occurred, with no other trains involved in the incident.

Network Rail is collaborating with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) to determine the cause of the derailment.

Passengers are encouraged to check their journeys before travelling by visiting www.nationalrail.co.uk or contacting their train operator.
