Telford and Wrekin Council reminds GCSE parents of child benefit rules
A warning has been issued.
Parents of some GCSE teens have been reminded to act now or they will automatically lose child benefit at the end of the month.
The benefit is worth a very useful £1,406 a year for an eldest or only child, and £930 for each additional child.
And payments can continue until offspring reach the age of 20 if they are in further education or approved training courses.
A spokesperson for Telford & Wrekin Council marked the “strong performances” of hundreds of GCSE students across the borough.
They added: “Parents of 16 to 19-year-olds starting further education or approved training courses from September are reminded they must extend their Child Benefit claim by August 31 or payments will stop automatically.”
Parents can extend their claim in minutes using the HMRC app or GOV.UK.
Child Benefit automatically stops on August 31 on or after a child’s 16th birthday if they leave education or training and parents do not tell HMRC that they’re staying in education or training.
Child benefit rates are currently £27.05 per week for the eldest or only child and £17.90 per child for each additional child.
Payments cannot continue for a young person studying for a university degree.
