Shropshire has been identified as having some of the bumpiest roads in England, based on a recent survey.

Councilclaims.co.uk conducted the research using local authority data and pothole figures, with the assessment covering the period from 2025 to 2026.

The survey evaluated the intensity of pothole repairs per 100 kilometres of road and assessed road conditions across various classifications such as A roads, B and C roads, and smaller local roads.

Shropshire ranked sixth overall, with 6.64 pothole repairs per 100 kilometres.

That includes nine per cent of A roads being in a poor condition, 13 per cent B and C roads, and 16 per cent that are unclassified, giving the county an overall score of 44.02.

Councillor Heather Kidd, leader of Shropshire Council, highlighted measures being taken to address the issue.

He said, "For too long, road repairs have not been inspected properly, allowing indifferent workmanship to go unchallenged, with poor repairs opening up after far too short a time."

The council aims to improve road repair standards by introducing a team of inspectors to evaluate completed repairs, with a requirement for rework if standards are not met.

Furthermore, Shropshire Council has secured an additional £1.5 million from the Government to fund extra road repairs.

In contrast to Shropshire, Nottingham has been deemed to have the worst roads in England, with a study showing 19 per cent of its A roads and 21 per cent of its B and C roads in poor condition.

Nottingham also recorded a high rate of pothole repairs, with 16.83 per 100 kilometres.

Meanwhile, Telford and Wrekin ranked joint 21st, with seven per cent of A roads and five per cent of B and C roads found to have potholes, and six per cent unclassified. A total of 2.63 potholes were repaired over 100km.
