Children and young people in Walsall now have access to a network of registered safe spaces — designated venues where they can go if they feel worried, unsafe, or simply need assistance while out in the community.

The Safe Spaces Scheme, launched by Walsall Council and backed by West Midlands Police, was developed in direct response to feedback from young people who wanted the town to be a safer and more supportive environment.

A total of 14 venues have joined the initiative, with staff receiving specialist training to ensure they can provide immediate reassurance, practical help and a listening ear to anyone in need.

Councillor Mark Statham, Portfolio Holder for Children’s, Families and Lifelong Learning, said:

“We’re proud to deliver on a commitment to our young people by launching this scheme. This is something young people have asked us for, and it’s their voices who have helped shape and deliver this."

“Safety is one of, if not, the biggest concern of our young people, and it’s schemes like this which will hopefully help combat these fears.”

Each participating location will display a distinctive window sticker, designed in collaboration with local young people to ensure it’s easy to spot.

Visitors will be greeted by trained staff ready to offer essentials such as phone chargers, power banks, or first aid supplies, along with a friendly and understanding presence.

Registered safe spaces include Walsall Bus Station, The Link, Legacy Church, and all council-run venues such as Our Place, Lichfield Street Library Hub, and the Gala Swimming and Fitness Centre.
