People living in Stafford are being asked whether they want a new town council to represent the area.

Letters are being sent to households across the county town, which is currently the only unparished part of the wider Stafford borough.

The proposal comes ahead of planned local government changes that would see the borough council replaced by a larger unitary authority in 2028. Officials say a town council could help ensure local representation continues.

The suggested council would cover Stafford and Doxey, and could allow the town’s historic mayoral tradition to continue.

If approved, elections for councillors could take place in 2027, representing around 49,000 residents.

The consultation runs until 22 March.
