'Not enough safe houses' for the number of domestic abuse cases in the Black Country
Black Country Women's Aid turned away more than two-thirds of people that needed refuge in 2024
A charity supporting people facing domestic abuse in the Black Country has told us we need more safe houses, after they turned away more than two-thirds of people needing refuge in 2024.
Black Country Women's Aid have launched a fundraiser so that they can kit out 10 new refuge flats with furniture.
They are also converting an office block into 6 flats, with the support of Dudley Council.
'Cut out Abuse':
The campaign is called 'Cut out Abuse' and is encouraging people to walk and raise money for Black Country Women's Aid.
Supporters are being asked to walk either 5, 10 or 15km with family, friends or colleagues in teams of up to 5 people.
The fundraiser is running until the end of September.
"There is a lack of availability in housing"
In total, Black Country Women's Aid wants to raise £15,000 which would cover the cost of furniture in the living rooms of 10 refuge flats.
Anna Fowler, from the charity, told us why they are struggling to keep up with demand for refuge:
"There are many factors, but we are finding that there is a lack of availability in housing and social housing. It makes it difficult for someone to find a flat quickly and securely," she said.
"They often only have the clothes on their backs"
Despite having to turn some victims of domestic abuse away, Anna said they still make sure people are supported:
"We can offer support in different ways, but moving in to safe and secure accommodation is often the first step in someone's recovery.
"When people flee domestic abuse, they often only have the clothes on their backs, so these refuge flats are essential," she said.
"1 in 4 women will experience it in their lifetime"
Anna said that the charity is trying to combat demand by raising as much money as possible to build more refuges:
"Please help us. People who are recovering from the trauma of domestic abuse are mothers, sisters, neighbours and friends. 1 in 4 women will experience it in their lifetime," she said.
