Renewed police commitment and community push for action a year on from racially aggravated rape of woman in Oldbury

West Midlands Police have renewed their committed to bringing the people responsible for the racially aggravated rape of a woman in Oldbury to justice a year on from the horrific attack.
Today (September 9) marks one year since a Sikh woman in her 20s was attacked on Tame Road - so far, no one has been charged over the incident.
Community members have voiced their concern over the slow progress of the police investigation and are continuing to push for action, to both improve safety in the aftermath and catch the perpetrators.
Calls for better safety on Tame Road continue
Miss Kaur lives nearby and, as a Sikh woman herself, was horrified by the attack.
She set up a petition after the news broke calling for lighting and CCTV cameras to be installed around the area to improve safety.
Over a thousand people from all across the country signed the petition and she said, while progress is slow, work is still underway to get the measures implemented.
"I would just hate to see something else happen," she said,
"We need some lasting difference to be made."
She said talks are underway with Sandwell Council and the academy trust that owns the nearby school over the land the lights and cameras would go on.
Miss Kaur also said the slow speed of the police investigation is disappointing and wants the case to remain a priority.
She said it's been six months since officers last knocked on doors in the area for the investigation.
She said: "I don't think we'll ever feel any sense of security until the people that did it are caught."
She added: "The whole community, and the Sikh community, as a whole are just feeling quite given up on."
Three people still under investigation
West Midlands Police confirmed three people are still under investigation while enquiries continue and that they remain committed to supporting the victim through the investigation.
They're once again asking anyone who has any information about the attack to come forward.
Chief Superintendent for Sandwell, Kim Madill, said: “We remain committed to bringing those responsible to justice and have dedicated officers working on this complex investigation since the incident took place last September.
“The victim has and continues to be at the heart of our enquiries.
“We have kept her updated throughout the investigation and specialist support services have provided further care.
“At every opportunity, together with my teams, I have kept local people updated. I have visited numerous public meetings, spoken to key community members and visited women’s and faith groups to facilitate discussions around any issues and concerns together with crime prevention advice.
“Three people remain under investigation as our enquiries continue.
“We continue to ask anyone with information on the incident who hasn’t yet come forward to contact us.”
