The police and crime commissioner (PCC) for West Mercia has said seeing a drop in overall crime is welcomed.

Latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have revealed total recorded crime fell by 4% between July 2024 and June 2025, following a 6% drop recorded earlier in the year.

Burglary saw one of the biggest decreases with 19%, while incidents of serious violence, overall theft and shoplifting were some others that saw a drop.

"For me it's part of a long term trend of crime going down," West Mercia's PCC John Campion said.

"This shows that this trend will continue, but for me it's also about how the public feels.

"What it should do is reassure (the public) that crime is going down and redoubling our efforts to make sure that trend continues," he said.

Also in the data, sexual offences were found to have increased by 9%, in line with the national average, and theft from a person had risen by 69 to 382 (22%).

On tackling the rise in sexual violence, Campion said it isn't something that's a 'quick fix' but would be working to ensure the "resources are available to address some concerning upward trends".

"The sexual violence and violence in our society more generally is the result of ingrained and deep long standing societal issues," he said.

"So we've got to make sure that we have continual investment in young people, giving them support around healthy relationships is just one example.

"All the way through to ensuring that we are supporting young people to go on to be healthy and happy adults that are contributing to society."
