Crimestoppers is supporting a new initiative in Oswestry to raise awareness about the dangers of knife crime and county lines drug networks, urging the public to share information anonymously.

The campaign challenges the misconception that carrying a knife provides protection. Instead, it highlights the increased risk of serious injury and violence escalation associated with knife possession.

Criminals who carry knives often disregard the safety of others, leading to potential injury of innocent individuals and lasting community impacts.

The campaign also sheds light on county lines activities, where organised criminal gangs exploit children, young adults, and vulnerable individuals to transport drugs, weapons, and money across regions.

Many of these networks are led by criminals based in large towns and cities, who groom vulnerable people as 'runners.' Social media is increasingly used to attract victims by presenting criminal activity as legitimate work opportunities.

The initiative urges the public to recognize the warning signs of county lines and to report suspicions they may have about someone's involvement.

Alan Edwards, Regional Manager for West Midlands at Crimestoppers, emphasized the reality of knife crime and the threat of county lines exploitation, stating: "Knives can escalate situations in seconds and have life-changing consequences for everyone involved."

Edwards also discussed the manipulation tactics used by criminal gangs to recruit vulnerable individuals, urging those with concerns about knife crime or county lines involvement to report information anonymously through Crimestoppers.

Information on knife crime, county lines activity, or individuals posing risks to the community can be provided by calling Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 or completing their secure online form at crimestoppers-uk.org.
