Wolverhampton leaders to raise awareness of domestic abuse for decades to come
They launch their annual 'Orange Wolverhampton' campaign today
Leaders in Wolverhampton have told us they are committed to raising awareness of domestic abuse and how to report it, for decades to come.
The City of Wolverhampton Council is launching it's annual campaign today (25th Nov), which began a decade ago in 2015.
Orange Wolverhampton...
Their campaign is called 'Orange Wolverhampton' which encourages people and local organisations to wear orange in solidarity with the cause.
The local authority is raising awareness of their drive to end all domestic abuse. They will host a number of drop-in sessions as well as walk-in support sessions at a number of local groups.
The campaign runs across 16 days, in line with the work of the United Nations.
'Support in different languages'
Councillor Obaida Ahmed, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Community, called for support to change to reflect modern challenges:
"We have lots of support in different languages, given how diverse Wolverhampton is. There is also support for the LGBT+ community.
"It is the same incidents but the theme changes each year, because of the times we are living in changing," she said.
'Coming together to say no'
Councillor Ahmed had this message: "Even if you had just the one story, it would still be sad. It is something that is completely avoidable, it should not happen in any way.
"There is no excuse for violence against any women, girls, men and boys. As a city we are coming together to say no.
"We are trying to make sure help is accessible online and in safe spaces such as libraries. It is so that people feel as comfortable as possible to speak out," she said.
