A pensioner in Shropshire is calling for more people to get their driving checked regularly so that they can keep their independence in later life.

New research by IAM RoadSmart reveals that almost half of Brits (46%) have had to confront an older relative about stopping driving.

The study also found that a third of people (35%) felt anxious or unsafe while being driven by their seniors, and one in five (20%) spotted new dents or scratches on their car.

But nearly half (46%) said they felt relieved after having the conversation. Experts say the key is approaching the topic calmly, showing care, and asking older drivers how they feel about continuing to drive.

67-year-old Sally Cassels, from Ludlow, is encouraging others to take the charity's 'mature drivers review', to change their bad driving habits. She said:

"There are four grades you can get including excellent, competent, needs development and safety concerns. You don't have to do anything with it but it can be reassuring."

Currently, people in the UK have to renew their driving licence every 3 years after the age of 70. Sally said there should be checks each decade so that older drivers can stay confident:

"I have thought about giving up driving but living in a rural area like Shropshire means being able to drive confidently is practical."

With the number of older drivers rising, IAM RoadSmart says better support is needed for both seniors and their families, making these tough talks easier and keeping roads safer.
