A man from Shrewsbury who raped and violently assaulted a woman has been jailed for 13 and a half years.

Leighton Smith, 36, of Lancaster Road in Shrewsbury, was previously found guilty of one count of rape, five counts of actual bodily harm and one count of witness intimidation.

Shrewsbury Crown Court heard how Smith subjected the victim to abuse and intimidation.

He was arrested and charged in 2025 and despite denying the offences, was found guilty by a jury.

Smith has also been handed a 15 year restraining order and will be on the sex offenders register for life.

Detective Constable Daniel Bushell said: "This case represents a significant outcome against a highly dangerous and violent perpetrator. The seriousness of his offending and the lengths he went to intimidate the victim were fully tested before the court.

"The victim in this case showed exceptional courage, and her decision to support the investigation, not only brought accountability and justice for what happened to her, but has also prevented further harm to others. I am grateful for her courage."
