A ten-year-old boy has been given an award after he calmly called 999 when a tumble dryer caught fire inside his home in Penkridge.

Harrison Spruce quickly alerted his mum after discovering the fire on 1 September.

His mum then got him and his brothers and sisters out of the house.

Harrison called 999 and gave fire control operators his full address, explained what was happening and confirmed that his family had got out safely.

Firefighters say he stayed calm and gave clear and accurate information.

Harrison has now received a special commendation from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service's Chief Fire Officer, Glynn Luznyj.

He said: “Harrison’s quick thinking, maturity and effective communication provided crews with a clear understanding of the incident before their arrival and contributed significantly to the safe outcome of the event.

“His action demonstrated exceptional courage, responsibility and awareness, serving as an excellent example to others.”

Glynn gave Harrison the award during a ceremony at Cannock Community Fire Station on Monday (28 September).
