Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service says the most likely cause of the fire on Castle Street, Shrewsbury, is believed to have been electrical.

The Service was called to Perches House at 3.24am on Tuesday 27th January and arrived within four minutes to find the fire was already severe. The building and the neighbouring properties were evacuated but sadly, a woman in her 80s was pronounced deceased at the scene despite the best efforts of the emergency services.

A fire investigation was carried out and concluded, the most likely cause is believed to be electrical.

Fire Investigation Officer Ross Donnely said: "This was a difficult fire investigation to carry out due to the extensive damage to the building and the limited access. We are confident the fire was accidental and the most likely cause was electrical however the exact ignition source is still under investigation.

"Our thoughts are with the woman's family and friends at this very difficult time."
