E-scooters and e-bikes seized in Walsall town centre clampdown
Operation Motto targets illegal riding and educates public on e-vehicle laws
An operation targeting anti-social behaviour in Walsall town centre has led to the seizure of three e-scooters and an e-bike that were being ridden illegally.
The joint effort by Walsall Prevention Hub and St Matthew’s neighbourhood officers took place on Tuesday under Operation Motto.
Officers seized four vehicles found in violation of regulations governing e-scooters and e-bikes.
E-bikes are deemed illegal if they travel faster than 3.7 mph when unassisted or exceed 15.5 mph when assisted, or if the motor outputs more than 250 watts.
E-scooters are permitted solely on private property with owner's consent and are illegal to operate on public roads or pavements.
Focus on Education and Prevention
The initiative prioritised both enforcement and public education regarding safe and legal e-vehicle usage.
PC Emily Fawlk, Road Harm Prevention Officer, highlighted the operation's success in seizing illegal vehicles and facilitating conversations with the public on the legalities and risks associated with e-bikes and e-scooters.
PC Fawlk said, “The operation was successful and we seized several vehicles which were being ridden illegally.”
“It also gave us the opportunity to have a chat to people about the issues surrounding electric bikes and scooters and explaining the law to them.”
She noted past incidents of collisions and emphasised proactive measures to prevent future occurrences.
The Prevention Hub—formed in collaboration with partners like Walsall Council—strives to address issues such as school engagement, knife crime, and anti-social behaviour, working seamlessly within the community at the Civic Centre.
The hub includes a team focusing on solving problems before they escalate, including a dedicated officer for anti-social behaviour and roles addressing serious violence among under 25s.

As part of the #SaferTownsSummer campaign, the team is committed to enhancing safety and welcoming environments in town centres and shopping areas.
The initiative involves visible reassurance patrols and enforcement activities, with local officers available for public concerns.
