Dudley pubs can stay open later for World Cup celebrations
Dudley Council hopes it will make it a "bumper" tournament for the borough's hospitality industry
Ahead of the tournament's kick off on June 11, pub landlords and bar owners in Dudley have been invited to temporarily extend their opening hours as part of the World Cup celebrations.
Dudley Council has written to pubs and bars across the borough offering help and advice in the lead-up to the global football tournament.
The council said it's licensing team’s work will not only make it a “bumper” tournament as fans flock to pubs to watch the game but will also help support safety in the licensed businesses.
"Major tournaments like the World Cup are a fantastic opportunity for a great time for our local pubs, clubs and hospitality businesses, and we’re pleased to support them to make the most of it," said Leader of Dudley Council, Patrick Harley.
"We want Dudley to have a fabulous atmosphere where people can come together, support their teams and enjoy themselves.”
Information issued to venues includes advice on national temporary extensions to licensing hours, giving venues the opportunity to welcome more customers during major fixtures involving home nations.
What time can venues stay open until throughout the World Cup?
When England or Scotland are playing, licensed venues can stay open later.
Pubs, bars and other hospitality venues can stay open until 1am for matches kicking off between 5pm–9pm and until 2am for matches kicking off between 9pm–10pm.
These extensions apply to rounds 32, 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, third place play-off and the final.
For all other matches, normal licensing hours remain in place.
The council has also shared practical guidance with venues to help them plan ahead, manage demand and ensure a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for customers.
The local authority said with thousands of people expected to head out to watch matches, the move is designed to support Dudley’s hospitality sector and boost the local economy during one of the biggest sporting events in the world.
Cllr Harley aqdded: "Working in partnership with West Midlands Police and other agencies, measures will be in place to help ensure public safety throughout the competition.
“We want everyone to have fun, but it’s important that celebrations don’t come at the expense of others. Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated, and we will take action where necessary.
"By looking out for each other and respecting our communities, we can all enjoy a bumper World Cup.”
