A 40-year-old man's been given a 20-week suspended jail sentence after leaving a police officer in Telford with a head injury.

Andrew McNab, of no fixed address, is also subject to a five-year Criminal Behaviour Order banning him from the town centre.

He was arrested in October after officers received calls a man had damaged a car on Stafford Street in St Georges, Telford.

When they arrived, officers found McNab making threats in the street.

The court heard how he then assaulted an officer who had taken McNab to hospital after complaints he was in pain.

The officer suffered cuts to the head.

Sergeant Richard Jones said: “This was a nasty and unprovoked attack on one of our officers, who was simply doing their job. He also caused alarm and distress to members of the public.

“I am pleased McNab has been given a CBO by the judge, which means he cannot enter certain areas within Telford, and if he does breach the order, it could mean he faces a further custodial sentence."
