Zameer Ali says Searjeant Street has become a speeding hotspot
A Peterborough councillor is pushing for speed bumps to be installed on a residential street after a crash over the weekend.
Zameer Ali, who represents North ward, says Searjeant Street, just off Lincoln Road, has become a hotspot for speeding.
He took to social media to share his plan for traffic calming measures following the crash.
Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Cllr Ali said: "I've been having complaints about Searjeant Street since I was elected to be honest with you."
He said: "It's similar down Cambridge Avenue as well. Because it's a straight road, people tend to put their foot down quite a lot."
Cllr Ali said that for the last few months, he and residents had repeatedly seen high-powered cars travelling at excessive speeds along Bourges Boulevard, Sergeant Street and Cambridge Avenue.
He said: "The local residents want speed bumps. I'm also working on something with regards to 20mph, but 20mph is only a sign and unfortunately people don't adhere to it."
The Labour councillor, who is also cabinet member for communities and public safety, confirmed he would be raising the issue with council officers directly.
He said: "We should not have to wait until somebody is seriously injured or worse before action is taken."
He said: "This isn't about pointing fingers. It's about finding solutions. We can keep talking about the problems, or we can actually do something about them."
