Beginning 1st September 2026, families in Peterborough will see an expanded eligibility for free school meals, allowing all school-aged children in households receiving Universal Credit to qualify, regardless of income.

This change could save families approximately £495 annually per child, providing substantial financial relief for those with multiple children relying on school lunches.

Peterborough City Council urges families to check their eligibility and apply for free school meals swiftly via the council's website. Existing recipients are also encouraged to reapply, as eligibility will be reassessed for the upcoming school year.

Children qualifying for 'Targeted' Free School Meals will retain access to the Holiday and Activity Food programme (HAF).

Councillor Katy Cole, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, expressed her approval of the expanded offer, highlighting the benefit it provides not just to the children, but also in securing additional funding for schools.

Cole emphasizes the council's commitment to assist families in need, encouraging prompt applications through an easy online process.

Parents and guardians are advised to act promptly to access these resources, ensuring their children receive nutritional benefits while supporting educational facilities.
