Peterborough City Council endorses Local Plan as Cabinet meeting approaches
Plan aims to balance development, environmental protection, and public interest
Peterborough City Council has taken a significant step in shaping the future development of the city by endorsing the Local Plan at an extraordinary meeting held on 29th September.
The decision follows a call-in of the original decision to approve the Local Plan last month, with the endorsement coming ahead of the Cabinet's final decision on launching a public consultation set for 1st October.
The Local Plan is a pivotal document guiding development decisions by local authorities. It delineates areas for development, those to be preserved, and ensures a balance between development, environmental protection, and broader public interest.
During the meeting, attended by the Full Council, 38 councillors voted in favour of endorsing the plan, with none opposing and two abstaining. Peterborough City Council comprises 60 members.
An essential recommendation arising from the discussions includes increasing the minimum requirement for social rent, aligning development strategies with community needs.
Councillor Numan Ali Iqbal, cabinet member for growth and regeneration, articulated the plan's significance: "As we have said before, our Local Plan needs to be considered and in the best interests for the future growth of our city. It ensures growth in our city happens in the right way and in the right areas."
Peterborough is poised for growth and expansion; the Local Plan is designed to facilitate this while safeguarding designated green spaces and addressing residents' needs.
The deadline for submitting the Local Plan to the Planning Inspectorate is set for 31st December 2026. Introduced in March, England's new local plan-making system mandates continuity for all current plans, compelling adherence to submission deadlines and more stringent regulations.
Council representatives remain optimistic about the plan's capacity to usher in sustainable growth conducive to long-term city planning.
As the Cabinet finalizes its decision, the expectation is high for a successful launch of the public consultation, fostering inclusive community participation.
