A burglar who ate a slice of birthday cake while ransacking a home in Peterborough has been jailed for two years and two months.

Abeeb Hussain, also known as Dillon Currie, was sentenced on 7th November at Cambridge Crown Court after admitting three counts of burglary in the Welland and Westwood areas of Peterborough.

Hussain, 33, targeted his first property on Eames Gardens, Welland, on 26th July, where he smashed a rear patio door to gain entry. Once inside, he stole a Samsung mobile phone, cut a slice of birthday cake in the kitchen, and ate it.

He then went on to break into a second property in Somerby Garth, also in Welland, 30 minutes later, again smashing a rear patio door to get inside. This time, Hussain stole steaks and other groceries.

Police identified Hussain using CCTV footage, and his DNA was found on a cigarette butt he left outside the property.

The next day, on 27th July, Hussain broke into another house on Flore Close, Westwood, by climbing through an open window. He took items that included a 50-inch television, a gold-coloured copy of the Quran, and kitchen knives.

Hussain was arrested on 1st August and found to be carrying the stolen copy of the Quran.

DC George Corney from the Acquisitive Crime Team expressed relief that the burglar had been caught.

“Hussain’s audacity to help himself to a slice of cake during a burglary is mind-boggling,” Corney said.

“These offences had a significant psychological, as well as financial, impact on the victims, so I’m pleased Hussain was swiftly identified and has now been brought to justice.

“Tackling burglary remains a priority for the constabulary and we will continue to bring perpetrators before the courts wherever possible.”
