A Cambridge man has been jailed for more than seven years after launching a violent attack on a man in Peterborough city centre.

Gavin Bainbridge, a 47-year-old from Mortlock Avenue, Cambridge, was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court yesterday (16th October) to seven years and three months in prison.

He will also spend a further four years on licence after his release.

Attack in Broadway pub

The court heard how Bainbridge got into an argument with the victim and his friend at a pub in Broadway at about 8pm on Monday 14th July.

When the victim, a man in his 60s, pushed Bainbridge away to try to leave, Bainbridge followed and began punching him repeatedly in the face before biting him on the chest.

Despite the victim attempting to walk away, Bainbridge continued the attack, throwing him to the ground and repeatedly punching and kicking him until he lost consciousness.

The victim’s friend tried to intervene but was also punched and verbally abused by Bainbridge.

Members of the public stepped in before police arrived and arrested Bainbridge.

Victim suffered broken ribs and bite wounds

The victim was taken to hospital where he was treated for two broken ribs, a split lip, a black eye, cuts to his face and three bite marks on his chest.

Bainbridge later admitted assault causing grievous bodily harm with intent, assault by beating and common assault of an emergency worker, after he spat at and kicked an officer while in custody.

Police welcome sentence

Detective Constable Hannah Worthington said: “This was a vicious and sustained attack that left the victim with serious injuries. It could easily have been even worse, such was the level of violence used.

“As well as the immediate physical injuries, the victim reported struggling with his mobility after the attack. It also had a significant psychological impact on his life.

“I’m pleased Bainbridge was apprehended at the scene and has now received a substantial custodial sentence.”
