A funding agreement between the Combined Authority and Peterborough City Council will soon make free parking available in the city centre to boost local commerce and attract more visitors.

Part of Mayor Paul Bristow's manifesto pledge, the initiative will allow free parking after 3pm from Monday to Friday in four City Council-owned car parks: Bishop's Road, Car Haven, Riverside, and Pleasure Fair Meadow.

Objective and funding

The trial, funded by the Combined Authority, aims to support high street businesses and compete against out-of-town retail and online shopping by increasing visitors to the city centre.

It also seeks to strengthen the evening economy, providing opportunities for local shops and businesses.

The initiative is backed by £1.5 million from Mayor Bristow's 2026/27 budget, which also extends support to Huntingdonshire.

Statements from city leaders

Mayor Paul Bristow, commented, "The health of our high streets has been under huge pressure for years and that needs to change. Free parking in Peterborough city centre is intended to be a shot in the arm."

Councillor Shabina Qayyum, Leader of Peterborough City Council, supported the scheme, noting its potential to attract residents, visitors, and new businesses to the city.

Qayyum added, "Peterborough city centre has so much to offer in terms of shopping, places to eat and drink, visitor attractions. This free parking offer should encourage more people to see what our city has to offer."

Regeneration efforts

The free parking trial is part of a larger regeneration plan for Peterborough city centre, including establishing a Mayoral Development Corporation and initiating construction work at Peterborough Station Quarter.

This scheme aligns with the City Centre Visioning project, which focuses on creating an inclusive and vibrant city centre.

Visitors and residents can soon benefit from the free parking initiative, enhancing their experience in the city.
