Food truck launched to tackle waste and feed families in need

New venture will use surplus supermarket food to serve affordable meals across Stamford

A new mobile catering truck has been launched in Stamford with the aim of turning surplus food into affordable meals for people struggling with the cost of living.

The vehicle will travel to events across the town, serving food made from surplus items donated by supermarkets, food which would otherwise have ended up in landfill.

Peter Beyer, from George's Food Hub, said the project gives the charity a new way to put unwanted food to good use, while also raising money to keep it running.

"It enables us to use the surplus food and it enables us to supply food at a very reasonable price to people at these events," he said. "And all of that money will go back into funding our project."

He said the need is closer to home than people might expect.

"Even in Stamford, there are pockets of people living in certain areas, even just very close to the centre of Stamford, who are living in food poverty, and we're a lifeline for them."

Mr Beyer said many people would be surprised by the standard of food being rescued from the bin.

"All this food, you'd be amazed at the quality of the food. And it's actually in many cases ridiculous that it's surplus food, because for that to go into landfill is really criminal."

He said the truck opens up another avenue for the charity to distribute food, as well as bringing in income to cover its running costs.

"It's another outlet that we can use for distributing the food, and it's going to generate some revenue for us, which is really important because we have a vehicle to run, we have electricity bills, et cetera, et cetera."
