Celebrate the River Day Set to Put Spalding’s Welland in the Spotlight
Organisers aim to showcase the town’s hidden gem and push for better access
Spalding’s River Welland is set for a starring role as plans ramp up for this year’s Celebrate the River Day, returning on Sunday, July 5th.
The event, led by Welland Yacht Club and local councillor James Le Sage, hopes to encourage more people onto the water and draw attention to what organisers call an under-used town asset.
Councillor Le Sage said:
“We just want to highlight what a great asset the river is to the town."
"I always felt that it was totally underutilised. We have the fantastic Spalding Water Taxi, which is a great asset to the town."
"The whole thing about the river day is just to highlight what a great asset it is and also hopefully to highlight that we need easier access to it because unfortunately at the moment access to the river is somewhat limited.”
This year’s event will feature a parade of paddle boards and canoes, with extra equipment on hand so more people can give the river a go.
Visitors are being asked to park at the old Rooke Agencies site on Cradge Bank.
Organisers are hoping the day will attract not only locals, but people from further afield, shining a spotlight on the river’s potential and the need for better access in the future.
