Whale sighting amazes sailors off Brixham coast
Marine spectacle leaves Devon crew in awe
Sailors enjoying the sunshine off the coast of Brixham were treated to an awe-inspiring moment when a humpback whale made a surprise appearance.
It happened earlier this week, when the majestic creature was spotted at the Devon beauty spot, initially appearing to be caught up in rope.
Tristan Northway, widely known on Facebook as MR FISH and skipper of a charter boat, shared a video of the encounter on social media, expressing his astonishment at the sighting.
He said the whale was later freed from the rope and observed swimming away, seemingly without needing assistance.
An unusual marine encounter
He shared his thoughts on the sighting, describing it as part of a larger pattern of unusual marine life activity in the area.
MR FISH said, "Afternoon Everybody... Right... this is exactly the sort of thing I've been talking about since the beginning of the year when I kept saying 'why is this happening?' and trying to join the dots with what we're seeing in our waters.
"Yesterday wasn't just 'a whale sighting.'
"It felt like another piece of a much bigger puzzle."
For months, observations of unusual marine life, plankton activity, changes in bait fish behaviour, strange sea fogs, and high numbers of hermit and spider crabs have been documented around Tor Bay.
He continued, "Now suddenly... a young humpback whale turns up off Brixham.
"People instantly say 'lost whale' or climate change... but the sea doesn’t work that simply... Everything is connected."
According to Northway, Tor Bay provides an ideal environment for marine life to gather due to its natural shape, tides, and calmer water pockets.
Northway explained that young humpback whales are known to explore more than older adults, making the appearance of a juvenile less surprising.
"What blows my mind is how many signs there's been this year before this happened.
"Then bang... after watching Risso’s dolphins, a humpback breaches right in front of Four Reasons.
"Proper once in a lifetime stuff."
His concluding thoughts offered a seasoned perspective on nature's signals: "One thing I do know after nearly 30 years at sea... when the sea starts acting differently, pay attention to it."
