'We need to resolve this' warns councillor, as bonfire night event faces cancellation
Teignmouth and Shaldon parish councils had jointly funded the event
Shaldon Parish Council says it is looking at ways to keep its annual bonfire and firework night celebrations going, after Teignmouth pulled its share of funding for the event.
Local town, district and county councillor David Cox urged all sides to work together and find a solution, saying he thinks talking will be the best way to resolve the situation.
In a post online, the Shaldon-based authority said: "This is the only free to attend traditional bonfire and Fireworks event held anywhere locally – an event we have kept purposefully free so that all families can attend, whatever their financial circumstances.
"It is also a hugely popular event, attracting large crowds of residents and visitors. Shaldon Parish Council are therefore determined to do all we can to continue to put on the Bonfire and Fireworks Event on our own.
"The withdrawal of Teignmouth’s financial and logistical support, however, has put the future of the event in significant jeopardy, and we now need to fully review whether it will be possible to hold a 2026 Shaldon Bonfire and Fireworks. Please bear with us - we will make a further announcement on this as soon as we can."
