Warning about batteries causing fires in recycling centres
Mid Devon's council is warning recycling batteries safely can help protect crews
There's a warning about leaving disposable batteries in bins - which could cause fires in waste recycling facilities
Mid Devon District Council has said: "Recycling batteries correctly is not only a matter of safety but also a vital environmental responsibility.
"Batteries contain hazardous materials that can leach into the soil and water if not recycled properly. By ensuring batteries are placed in designated recycling boxes, we contribute to the protection of our environment and reduce the risk of fires."
Councillor Josh Wright, Cabinet Member for Environment and Services, added: “Correct battery disposal is a simple step that can make a big difference. By recycling batteries safely, residents can help protect collection crews, reduce the risks of fires, and prevent harmful materials from damaging our environment.
“We’re asking everyone to take a moment to check how they dispose of batteries and follow the guidance provided.”
