Oxford City Council has received positive feedback from the public on its £8 million improvement programme for Oxford's Covered Market.

The consultation, running from 9th June to 10th July 2026, showed widespread support for enhancing the market while safeguarding its historical character.

The proposals aim to upgrade facilities, entrances, and food and seating areas.

According to the survey, 60% believe the plans balance improvements with historic preservation.

Almost 66% said enhancements would encourage more frequent visits, while 66% also felt proposed food and seating would increase the duration of their stay.

The entrance improvements were backed by 74%, making the market feel more inviting.

Support for facility upgrades like toilets and lighting stood at nearly 90%, with 67% expressing strong approval.

The feedback underscores the role of the Covered Market in city life, frequently visited for eating, drinking, shopping, and browsing.

As part of a broader effort, the council aims to preserve the market’s historic charms while ensuring it remains a vibrant hub for individuals and businesses.

Public comments and suggestions will be considered to refine the proposals before submitting a planning application later this summer.

Work is set to commence mid-2027, finishing in 2029, with minimal disruption to traders and the public.

Councillor Susan Brown, said: "I would like to thank everyone who took the time to share their views on the future of the Covered Market. The results show clear support for improving the market while protecting the historic character that makes it such a special place.

"The consultation has also provided valuable feedback that will help us refine our proposals as we move forward. We remain committed to working closely with traders and visitors to ensure the Covered Market continues to thrive for generations to come."
