Cliftonville announce death of Michael Newberry

Tributes are being paid to the Cliftonville player

Cliftonville player Michael Newberry has passed away suddenly, the club has announced.

In a statement the club said: “Cliftonville FC are devastated to learn of the sudden death of Michael Newberry. Our condolences are extended to Michael's family and friends, as well as the many team-mates he played with during his career, and fans who will be shaken and saddened by this heartbreaking news.

Condolences have also been paid by the NI Football League, announcing as a mark of respect, that Cliftonville’s match against Dungannon Swifts in the Sports Direct Premiership tonight has been postponed.

Mr Newberry’s former club Linfield also offered condolences in a statement.

“Linfield FC is devastated to learn of the sudden passing of our former player, Michael Newberry.

"Linfield has agreed with NIFL that tonight’s Premiership game against Larne should be postponed.

Glentoran Football Club has offered thoughts and prayers to those at the club and to Michael's family.

A statement online reads: "The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the club are with Michael’s family and friends at this very sad time.”

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Cliftonville defender Michael Newberry.

"Everyone at Glentoran Football Club extends our heartfelt condolences to Michael's family, friends, and teammates at this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

"Rest in peace, Michael"
