Five police cars have been badly damaged and an officer has been injured after a man threw tiles and a knife from a roof during a stand-off with police in North Belfast.

Two cars belonging to members of the public were also damaged when it happened last night in the Lepper Street area.

A trained negotiator had to be called in and an arrest was then made.

Police had initially been called to the residential property following a report of an assault on a woman.

They say the suspect hid in a wardrobe and became aggressive which forced police to withdraw, before he then climbed onto the roof.

PSNI Inspector Knowles said officers will be in the area again today, to continue with enquiries and check surrounding properties and vehicles for further damage.
