Families invited to join Water Chute's millionth splash
The event aims to raise funds for essential repairs to Wicksteed Park's beloved attraction
Wicksteed Park is inviting visitors to be part of history as its iconic Water Chute approaches its one-millionth splashdown.
The milestone event, taking place on Tuesday 1st September will celebrate the century-old attraction while raising awareness of a campaign to fund urgent repairs needed to protect its future.
The Wicksteed Charitable Trust is aiming to raise £30,000 to restore the ride's roof ahead of the 2027 season.
Ten people will be chosen to take part in the landmark splashdown, with five selected on the day and another five picked from members of the public who submit stories explaining why they should be chosen.
One of the oldest surviving water rides in the world and the oldest of its kind in the UK, the Water Chute has delighted generations of visitors since it was built by park founder Charles Wicksteed in 1926.
The attraction has been awarded Grade II listed status by Historic England and remains largely unchanged, meaning riders experience the same thrills enjoyed by families for nearly a century.
Allison Waterhouse, Head of Fundraising at Wicksteed Park, said the appeal was about more than preserving a building.
"Essential roof restoration work is required to protect the future of the Water Chute and ensure it can continue delighting visitors for generations to come," she said.
"But this appeal is about far more than restoring a roof. It's about protecting an important part of Wicksteed Park's history, preserving one of Britain's most iconic historic rides and ensuring future generations can continue making memories at the home of children's play."
She said the ride has become a cherished part of family life for many visitors.
"For generations of families, that famous splash has become part of childhood memories, family traditions and visits to Wicksteed Park."
