Northamptonshire Police are warning people to be careful when sharing images online following an increase in sextortion cases.

These crimes involve blackmail where individuals are coerced into sending sexual images or videos, with threats to expose them unless they pay money or send more content.

Since October 2025, over 120 sextortion reports have been received, primarily involving young boys who shared sexual images with someone who turned out to be a blackmailer.

Detective Inspector Liam O’Neill explained how offenders often use fake profiles to form quick emotional connections and pressure victims into sending images:

"Please be vigilant when sending photos to people, especially those you have never met.

"Ask yourself why anyone would ask for sexual photos straight away and take a moment to think before you press send.”

He noted that many offenders operate from outside the local area or country, using encrypted accounts that are difficult to trace.

The Inspector emphasised the importance of early reporting to police to prevent further harm.

Victims frequently feel embarrassed about coming forward, sometimes leading to severe emotional distress.

DI O’Neill said: “If you have been a victim of sextortion, please know that you are not alone. We can help, we don’t judge, and there is no shame in making a mistake in choosing who to trust.”

Victims are advised against paying money and encouraged to report incidents immediately. Police offer safeguarding advice, help to prevent further contact or harm, and support from specialist teams.
