The former detective constable resigned before the hearing

Gareth Carter, a former detective constable, would have been dismissed without notice following a gross misconduct hearing conducted by Northamptonshire Police on 23rd March 2026.

Carter faced allegations of breaching professional standards by demonstrating a lack of respect towards members of the public and police colleagues and making comments that were considered offensive or inappropriate, potentially undermining public confidence.

The accusations related to Authority, Respect and Courtesy, as well as Discreditable Conduct and Equality and Diversity.

The hearing proceeded without Carter, who had already resigned from his position, and he did not attend the session.

Despite his absence, the panel reviewed the evidence and concluded that his actions amounted to gross misconduct.

As a result, they determined that, had he remained in service, dismissal without notice would have been justified.

Northamptonshire Police maintains that community trust is vital and upholds high standards for its workforce, addressing misconduct seriously.

Anyone with concerns about police behaviour can report them via 101 or the local department's website.
