Smokers in North Northamptonshire are being urged to quit as figures show the area's smoking rate remains above the national average.

About 13% of adults in North Northamptonshire smoke, according to the latest data, making it one of the key public health challenges facing the area.

The call comes as the council's stop smoking service launches a new identity ahead of Stoptober, with The Quit Hub replacing its previous branding.

Pippa Williams, a consultant in public health and lead for the service, said people should not be put off seeking support, even if they had tried to quit before.

"We know that nicotine is really addictive, but there is support out there to help people take that next step towards quitting for good," she said.

"Whether it's your first attempt to quit or you've tried before, support is available for everyone and our service is here with them on that journey."

The Quit Hub offers 12 weeks of free support from specialist advisors, as well as nicotine replacement products or vapes to help people stop smoking.

National evidence suggests smokers are three times more likely to quit successfully with support than when trying to stop on their own.

Research also shows those who stay smoke-free for 28 days are five times more likely to quit for good, making Stoptober a key opportunity for people looking to break the habit.

Williams said it was never too late for smokers to benefit from giving up.

"Even if you just want to find out a bit more information and you might not be ready, please get in contact with the service," she said.

People can refer themselves to The Quit Hub through North Northamptonshire Council's website or by contacting the service directly.
