A 52-year-old man from Corby has been sentenced to 11 years in prison after being found guilty of eight child sex offences.

Derek McAvoy was convicted of sexually abusing a girl between 2008 and 2019, including inappropriate touching and photographing her while undressed.

The victim courageously reported the abuse to Northamptonshire Police in 2019, leading to McAvoy's arrest and subsequent charges of sexual assault and other related offences.

The charges against McAvoy included one count of sexually assaulting a girl under 13, four counts of sexually assaulting a girl under 16, two counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and one count of voyeurism.

McAvoy took his case to trial at Northampton Crown Court, where the jury delivered guilty verdicts on all counts after a four-day trial concluding on 2nd April.

He was sentenced to 11 years in prison on the same day.

Detective Constable Kirstie Brooks from the Child Abuse Investigation Unit of Northamptonshire Police expressed satisfaction with the verdicts.

“I am really pleased to see this case end with guilty verdicts, and I hope the survivor in this case feels both a sense of justice and that she has been truly listened to and heard,” Brooks said.

“McAvoy’s abuse was extensive and prolonged, and he is now thankfully behind bars, where people who commit these types of offences belong.”

She extended thanks to retired officer DC Sharon Jephcott for her work on the case and reassured the public of continued efforts to ensure offenders like McAvoy face justice.
