An operation targeting illegal e-scooter and e-bike use in Corby resulted in the seizure of 29 vehicles, including 23 e-scooters, during a day of action on 13th June.

The police operation, dubbed Operation Tides, was conducted by officers from the Safer Roads Team, Roads Policing Team, and Neighbourhood Policing Team, with support from the National Police Air Service.

The effort aimed to enhance local safety by enforcing laws on e-scooters and e-bikes, as well as motorcycles and cars lacking required insurance or licences.

Chief Inspector Nathan Shepherd highlighted the community concerns prompting the operation: “This operation continues to send a clear message that the illegal use of e-scooters and e-bikes will not be tolerated."

According to Shepherd, the initiative stemmed from consistent complaints about anti-social behaviour and dangerous riding related to these vehicles. The operation underscores the commitment to public safety and responsive enforcement.

Under UK law, e-scooters are classified as motor vehicles, necessitating a licence and insurance when used in public spaces, and it's illegal to insure privately owned e-scooters. Similarly, e-bikes have regulations regarding the rider's age, motor power, and speed.

The police vowed to maintain proactive measures to educate the public and curtail unlawful use of these vehicles, ensuring safety in towns and communities.
