A driver from County Durham has been sentenced for a hit and run which killed a student.

Abigail Eggleston from Northamptonshire died in the early hours of the 26th of October last year.

The 22 year-old who was studying law at Durham University was crossing the A167 at Neville's Cross in the city when she was hit by a Volkswagen Golf being driven at speed.

She was taken to Newcastle's RVI but died a short time later.

Liam Bowes from Kelloe, County Durham, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison and disqualified from driving for 18 years.

The 37-year-old previously admitted causing death by dangerous driving, perverting the course of justice, driving without insurance and failing to stop after a collision.

Teeside Crown Court heard how Bowes also set the car on fire after abandoning it in a lay-by.

Abigail's family described her as a 'constant ray of sunshine.'
