A city-wide campaign in York is tackling the often hidden financial abuse of older people, encouraging victims, families, friends, and neighbours to seek support.

Led by City of York Council alongside Independent Domestic Abuse Services (IDAS), Age UK York, and other community organizations, the initiative aims to educate residents on recognising financial abuse as a form of domestic abuse.

The campaign will feature posters, videos, leaflets, and outreach activities throughout the city, with information shared in libraries, GP surgeries, pharmacies, and community venues.

Research suggests that older individuals can experience financial abuse for extended periods before seeking assistance. This form of abuse may include coercion to relinquish money, misuse of pensions or savings, manipulation around financial decisions, abuse of Power of Attorney, theft, or restricted access to financial resources.

Campaign materials are based on real-life scenarios to help people identify behaviours that may not be immediately recognised as abusive.

Councillor Lucy Steels-Walshaw emphasized, “Financial abuse is a hidden form of domestic abuse that can have a devastating impact on older people's independence, wellbeing and quality of life.”

The initiative seeks to inform York residents about the signs of financial abuse and assure them that support is available.

A spokesperson for IDAS stated, “Domestic abuse can happen to anyone at any age. It can occur between adults when one person tries to gain control over another.”

Carl Wain of Age UK York added that financial abuse can strip older people of their confidence and sense of security, and highlighted the importance of seeking advice if concerned about oneself or others.

The campaign stresses that financial abuse doesn't always come from strangers and often involves trusted individuals.

Support is available through IDAS, Age UK York, and emergency services for those concerned about financial abuse.
